The aim of this policy is to encourage self discipline and awareness of the positive contribution all students can make to college life. We aim to provide a moral framework for students’ personal development so that they become tolerant members of the school community. Bullying, racism, sexism and other antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated. The highest standards of behaviour are expected by our students, and the college will take whatever actions are needed to ensure maintenance of these standards. We will ensure that there is no differential application of the policy on any grounds, particularly ethnic or national origin, culture, religion, gender, disability or sexuality.
Students have a responsibility to ensure that incidents of disruption, violence, bullying and any form of harassment are reported to the college authorities. We ensure that the necessary communication channels, through our personal tutoring system, are available for this purpose. The Principal will be responsible for making sure that the procedures are consistently and fairly applied, taking into account all Health and Safety and Child Protection legislation.
Rules and Discipline
Formal rules are kept to a minimum at Duff Miller, although there are some which apply to specialist teaching rooms, such as laboratories and the art studio, which are necessary for Health and Safety reasons. When rules are broken, routine discipline is exercised by staff on a day-to-day basis as the need arises. For more serious offences, the Principal may be involved, and this could result in a verbal or written warning. For the latter, a copy of the letter will be sent to parents. The letter will warn that repeat offences could result in expulsion from the college. Students have a right to expect fair and consistently applied sanctions, so the college will endeavour to ensure that this is the case. An appropriate sanction is one which is designed to put matters right and encourage better performance or behaviour in the future.
