A good grade in A-level Maths is essential for studying many subjects at University, including Computing, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Physics and Psychology. These all require a high degree of numeracy - the ability to analyse data, and to think both logically and laterally. Numeracy is a highly-prized skill, both by admissions tutors at universities and by recruiters for graduate-trainee programmes.
The Maths Department is one of the largest at Duff Miller, and prides itself on excellent results and individual care and support. Small group tuition is usually offered on the Edexcel board, although other boards are also taught.
The most important skill the department imparts is to understand the language of Maths. Despite popular misconceptions, Maths can be fun.
FAST-TRACK MATHS
Students who have a grade A* or A at GCSE Maths may study Maths A-level in one year – this is called fast-track Maths. Students who opt for fast-track Maths may be planning to continue with Further Maths in their upper sixth, or alternatively they may want to show that they are capable of completing an A-level in one year. Getting a top grade in one year looks very good on a UCAS form, so if you’re considering applying for a competitive course and/or applying to a top university this could be the course for you.
