History provides an exciting analysis of the forces and personalities that have shaped the modern world. Dramatic events such as the Balkan and Gulf wars cannot be understood fully without a grounding in history. Equally it is difficult to understand legal or business problems, for example, without some knowledge of the subject. In short, history is an exciting and respected topic at A-level and beyond.
History at Duff Miller concentrates on the modern era from the Renaissance to the end of WW II. Popular special topics include modules on Nazi Germany, The Weimar Republic and the Russian Revolution. Teaching is in small friendly groups and there is an emphasis on flexibility in both style and content. Students are encouraged to write quickly and fluently and to read widely. The analysis of documents prepares students for stimulus response questions and essay practice helps with the skills required in composition. Debate is encouraged in order that students realise that history offers a variety of answers to complex questions.
