Economics is a popular course at Duff Miller College. It is recognized as a strong A level that provides a gateway to some of the best university courses and the basis for a career in finance or other sought after sectors.
Economics at A level, covers four modules that deal with markets, market failure, national economics, industrial economics and globalization. Examinations are based mainly on data response material but including some essays and multiple choice questions.
The Head of Economics Dr Wall has had many years of experience teaching the subject at both A level and at the University of London.
The subject is increasingly an applied one, looking at practical issues and problems. As such, it aims to equip students with essential skills for life. The A2/AS courses are taught using past papers with a strong emphasis on examination technique. Timed practice and regular mocks are used to guarantee success at A level.
Past students from Duffs have gone on to university courses at Warwick, Cambridge, University College London and, The London School of Economics. Teaching at Duff Miller makes use of class discussion, understanding of current affairs and strong participation. Students are encouraged to read widely and use the Economist as an on-line college resource to improve their understanding. Individual support and EFL lessons are provided for students whose first language is not English.
