Chemistry is a subject that is seen as crucial to the pursuit of many scientific degrees. These range from Medicine and Dentistry to Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy. However it also provides a range of answers to many everyday questions, such as: Why is ice less dense than water? How does DNA form its characteristic double helix? Why does water cool down when salt is added? Why do some reactions only happen at certain temperatures? Why does graphite (a non metal) conduct electricity?
The aim of the Chemistry department at Duff Miller is try raise a genuine quizzical awareness of the subject, coupled with a solid understanding of the chemical principles involved. To bring the subject to life we make extensive use of multi media facilities and other real applications of the subject.
Many students study Chemistry with us as a means to an end. Medical schools all demand Chemistry as the key science at A-level. This is also true for those students wishing to be Vets, Dentists, Pharmacists and Physiotherapists. However many choose the subject as a bridge between other disciplines and the sciences. Chemistry has a long history from Plato and his ideas of the atom, through to alchemy in the Middle Ages, to modern drug development and the fight against diseases such as cancer.
Chemistry ties together so many facets of our lives, both scientific and everyday. An understanding and appreciation of the subject provides many a new outlook on an ever-changing world.
