The course aims to reflect the current state of biological sciences with some degree of emphasis on modern applications such as gene technology and the human genome project. The syllabus is wide ranging in its consideration of biological facts but throughout there is considerable emphasis on understanding the material. A sound knowledge of biology not only gives a student insight into the workings of life on this planet – a reward in itself – but also a grasp of facts relevant to medicine and related vocations. While studying biology students are also taught how to interpret complex sets of experimental results, to evaluate them and make constructive criticism accordingly.
