Further Maths is a second Maths A-level, and involves the study of a further six modules including at least two Further Pure modules. At Duff Miller we teach three Further Pure modules (FP1, FP2 and FP3) and six Applications modules - two Decision Maths modules (D1 and D2), two Mechanics modules (M1 and M2) and two Statistics modules (S1 and S2). Students will have studied 2 Applications modules as part of A-level Maths, and in A-level Further Maths they must study new (as in different) Applications modules. They can either study 2 Further Pure modules and 4 Applications modules or 3 Further Pure modules and 3 Applications modules.
Some students may choose Further Maths as an AS level, in which case they study FP1 and 2 new Applications modules.
Students who study both Maths and Further Maths (commonly called Double Maths) are usually looking to do a highly-mathematical course at university, such as Engineering, Physics or Maths itself. For many other university courses Double Maths would be considered to be too much Maths, unless Further Maths is a fourth A-level. If you are unsure as to whether Double Maths would be suitable for your university course you should contact the relevant admissions tutor.
