A-Level Classical Civilisation

Studying the Ancient World is very satisfying, because it gives you insights into yourself and how our modern day society compares with The Greeks and The Romans.

While the Ancient World may seem remote from the problems of today, yet the study of these ancient societies can help you make sense of our contemporary society. Their response to social and economic change and to the issues of justice, discrimination and violence is very illuminating and human beings, throughout time, have much the same way of dealing with such challenges.

This is an extremely diverse subject, while its focus is on literature and society of Classical Greece and Rome, it covers more than just Plato and Archaeology; there are elements of Religion, Art, Philosophy, Theatre, Astronomy, Mythology, and Politics. All our social understanding and experience has a predecessor in the Ancient World.

For GCSE you will cover Home and Family in Athens, Selections from 'The Odyssey', Roman Religion and Selections from Virgil's 'Aeneid'. In addition you will prepare a 3000 word essay on an aspect of Roman or Greek Society.

In the first year of A-level you will cover 'The Illiad', the Development of Athenian Democracy and 'The Mycenaean's' as a coursework piece. During the second year you will cover 'The Aeneid', Greek Sculpture and the choice of any coursework topic.
